In the span of just a week, millions crowded OpenAI's ChatGPT to turn their own photos into a distinct fantasy style animation similar in style to the images popularly produced by Japan's prominent animation studio, Studio Ghibli. Although the trend is a delightful means of reimagining personal portraits in a desired art form, it also presents substantial privacy issues that need serious consideration. 

The Ghibli Chic 

The AI-generated Ghibli-look trend has transformed images in the real world into dreamy pictures that look like they are straight out of a Ghibli movie. OpenAI's new GPT-4o model has made it simple for users to create pictures in the distinctive style of Hayao Miyazaki movies, transforming even family portraits or celebrity portraits into whimsical-looking animated paintings. 

This record-breaking spike in traffic made OpenAI's chatbot experience unparalleled user activity, even to the point where it crashed its servers and limited users to the image-generation feature temporarily. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even said that due to the immense demand for these images, “our GPUs are melting!”  

Core Privacy Concerns 

Although the Ghibli trend might appear to be innocent fun, it highlights a range of serious security and privacy threats that most users are oblivious to.  

Data Collection and Usage 

When people submit personal pictures to ChatGPT’s Ghibli-themed generator through individual prompts, they effectively relinquish control over the image. Unlike images scraped up from the internet, these are generally well-illuminated, forward-facing, high-resolution images that can be used for creating and training various technologies like facial recognition software for example. 

"Unlike passive collection methods, such AI solutions acquire high-resolution face images directly from users, generally under wide consent terms," says IDfy Chief Privacy Officer Paritosh Desai. "Most users think they're simply messing around with a fun changing tool, but actually, they might be offering companies free biometric data access." 

Luiza Jarovsky, co-founder of the AI, Tech & Privacy Academy, points out that "OpenAI's privacy policy states very clearly that the company gathers users' personal data entered into its systems in order to train its AI models when users haven't opted out." This practice enables AI businesses to have ready access to fresh biometric information without certain required data privacy safeguards. 

Lack of Transparency 

Most users are not informed of the potential uses of their personal information beyond the initial use of developing a Ghibli-like picture. Privacy terms of AI picture generators tend to be vague, and thus it becomes challenging to notify users of how their information is stored, processed, and, in some cases, shared with third parties.

  • For how long your data is going to be stored 

  • Whether your images are going to be used to train AI models 

  • Whether your data will be handed over to third parties 

For example, OpenAI’s privacy policy clearly states that unless users opt out, their personal data may be used to train AI systems

Furthermore, the emergence of open-source AI models like Stable Diffusion, which can be installed and run locally using interfaces like Automatic1111 or ComfyUI, or even directly via python, provides a means to generate AI art while maintaining complete data control. These offline solutions mitigate the risks associated with data breaches and unauthorized access, ensuring that sensitive images remain securely on the user's device. While requiring potentially more powerful hardware and technical setup, the enhanced privacy offered by these offline methods is a significant advantage.
